Today is my birthday (and yes, I've heard "beware the Ides of March" just a few times) and the celebrating is low-key. I don't generally like to be the center of attention, and that extends to my birthday.
(Thank you for the wonderful birthday wishes Joan and Will - and for not mentioning it Friday, and Alison - somehow I missed you at Stitches, and I was looking for you. Thanks also to my sister, brother and SIL - she shares the same birthday, Greg from my project team, and my dear friend Dave - who's been my friend for 27years - is that possible? for the calls and emails.)
This year, rather than doing one big thing as in the past - going to the theater in SF, with dinner before and dessert after or something along those lines - I decided to celebrate for a few days, doing something special each day.
Friday my co-workers surprised me with flowers, in "my" colors:
There are sunflowers, rust and cream lilies that resemble Stargazer's in scent and pattern, rust orchids, yellow orchids, roses that are rust on the inside and caramel on the outside...just perfect.
I headed out to lunch a little early with 2 destinations in mind: the jewelry vendors at Justin Herman plaza and the Coach leather store. I bought a string of black freshwater pearls and a gaspeite nugget necklace. and commissioned a freshwater pearl and abalone shell pendant necklace.
I've always coveted a Coach handbag, and this year decided to treat myself to one. I was really disappointed with the selection at the store - trendy colors, fabric and leather bags, contrast stitching. Three female salesclerks were unable to find anything that resembled what I described, so the lone male salesclerk stepped in. He asked how they would describe my clothing - classic, good quality, elegant were the answers. He then suggested perhaps I would prefer something from the "classic" section of the catalog - exactly what I wanted. It's ordered (at the same price as when it was originally introduced) and will arrive early next week.
Friday evening Mr. Ken and I joined many friends from Niles at the debut performance of the Nileistics, a rock-folk-70s band founded less than a year ago by Joan's husband Will. It was fun, it was crowded, it was loud, and most importantly, the band was good! I had camnesia, so more about the evening can be found on Joan's blog.
I woke this morning to find multiple birthday cards on my nightstand, in the bathroom with my toothbrush and in the kitchen. As always, one was signed by the cats with little paw prints.
Today we went to garden stores and bought 6 tomato plants, 1 pepper, 1 zucchini, 1 cucumber, green beans, herbs and marigolds for the veggie garden. We also bought Siberian Wallflower, black Ipomea, purple pansies, Black Knight delphiniums, an almost black poppy, peach-y pansies and yellow jasmine for the Roy G. Biv garden, and a Shania Japanese Maple for the front yard.
For entertainment tonight, we headed to the Stanford Theatre, and 2 Hitchcock movies: The Wrong Man and Vertigo. Dinner was movie theatre popcorn and gummy bears.
It's been a wonderful birthday so far, and the fun continues tomorrow.
